Flip Flops & Wet Tops

Date: Wednesday, August 6th, 2014
Time: 10:00 AM to 1:00 PM

I love making novelty totes, so here is a cute little flip flop shaped carry tote for your wet bathing suits or whatever you want to carry to the beach and back. I applied iron-on vinyl to the lining to make it waterproof. What a fun gift for a teen or anyone who is young at heart.

Class Description

I love making novelty totes, so here is a cute little flip flop shaped carry tote for your wet bathing suits or whatever you want to carry to the beach and back. I applied iron-on vinyl to the lining to make it waterproof. What a fun gift for a teen or anyone who is young at heart.

Materials & Cutting
  • Flip Flops & Wet Tops Pattern. Call the store if you need a pattern. It comes with a CD and sells for $9.95
  • 18 in. square double sided quilted cotton fabric. – fabric A(outside)**
  • 18 in. square double sided quilted cotton fabric. – fabric B (inside)**
  • 1 ½ yards of double fold bias binding. Or you can make your own binding with a 14” piece of coordinating fabric. I can show you how.
  • 1- 6” piece of fabric for zipper tabs.
  • 2 pieces of 8” x 15” utility mesh or Nifty Notions mesh. Schiller’s carries a heavier weight mesh that is great for this project.*
  • 18 in. square of Heat & Bond iron-on vinyl.
  • 7” of 1” webbing for handle. (I sewed a strip of grosgrain ribbon down the handle webbing for a little pop)
  • 12” or longer zipper
  • 2 yards of 7/8” grosgrain ribbon (includes ribbon for bows)
  • 1” of ¾” Velcro
  • Glue stick optional but helpful
  • Water soluble marking pen
  • Coordinating threads and matching bobbin ( I also used monofilament thread to topstitch because I didn’t want to see the thread).
  • Clover wonder clips or pins
  • Your sewing machine.

**I couldn’t find any double quilted fabric that I liked so I made my own. I used two 18” pieces of fabric for the outside pieces and two 18” pieces of plain fabric for the lining. You will not see this fabric so use something from your stash. Then I quilted the fabric using batting in between. One fashion fabric quilted to the plain fabric. If you plan on making your own quilted fabric, PLEASE DO THIS PART AT HOME. It will save a lot of time in class. Thank you.

*Schiller’s carries the heavy weight vinyl mesh in colors Lime Green, Bright Pink, Blue, Purple, Red and Orange. The size is 36”x50”. You will be able to make six totes with this size. Just let me know what color you would like. We do have blue and purple in stock. This item sells for $7.99.

Please let me know if you will attend class and need or order the mesh or pattern so I can have them for you.
