Over the past couple of years, lots of embroidery designers have been busy creating designs using a delightful material known as Mylar. Mylar is often used to generically refer to polyester film or plastic sheets. It is a registered trademark owned by Dupont for a specific family of plastic sheet products made from the resin Polyethylene Terephthalate (PET). We are probably most familiar with the term Mylar when we think about the shiny material that balloons are made of. Mylar is available for purchase in many colors, but the most common style being just the opaque type. This semi-clear choice can be used for just about any design, taking on the color of the thread that is stitched over it. I like to use the opaque version sometimes but I prefer to use the many beautiful colors that are available. Basically, you use the Mylar plastic in place of fabric that you would use for an appliqué. Some gentleness is needed when using the Mylar, but once it starts to be stitched, it holds its own. Nancy’s Notions (nancysnotions.com) stocks Mylar in separate color sheets and has a really nice Ultimate Set that includes all twelve colors available. I will have a couple of the Ultimate Sets here for purchase as well as some of the individual colors. Please let me know if you would like me to order a set for you and I will have it here for the first class. When we order merchandise from Nancy’s Notions, we do not have to pay for shipping. The Ultimate Set sells for $39.99 and includes twelve colors with five 18” x 30” sheets of each. The individual colors sell for $2.09 and also have three sheets per color.
For the sample designs, I used Anita Goodesign’s Mylar Spring Design Pack. Anita also has Mylar Bookmarks and Mylar Christmas Design Packs. Kimberbell also has a new Mylar 3D flower design set for $9.99 But feel free to bring ANY designs digitized specificly for mylar. Let us know if you would like us to order any of these design packs for you to purchase. The Spring and Christmas CD’s are $69.95 and the Bookmarks are $34.95. This will be a two day class with a fee of $20.00. If working with Mylar sounds interesting to you, come and join our class and we will show you how to take your embroidery to a new and sparkling level! Hope to see you in class!
*The amounts of fabric, stabilizer and batting listed are for just the sample that is shown. Please increase the yardage accordingly if you would like to make your project larger*
