When I saw this neat little zip-up bag pattern, I immediately knew that I wanted to sew it out!  Also, I knew that it was not only going to be fun to make but useful as a sewing travel bag as well as a knitting or art supply case.  The construction is easy and if you choose a few fun fabrics for your bag, it turns out really cute!  It is a good sized carry-all with a large purse zipper on the outside and three wide, floating, zippered pouches on the inside.  The dimensions are 13 ½ in x 7 in x 5 ½ in.

I purchased five different black and white fabrics and a nice red to compliment them.  When I was cutting out the pieces I was afraid that the fabrics were going be a little bit “much” together but in the end I like the whole busy look!!  I found this pattern on Etsy and you can click HERE for a direct link to purchase it for yourself.  You will need to print out the pattern for class.  We will need two days to complete our bag so the cost for class will be $20.  I promise you will love this cute and useful bag.  Hope you can join us!!

Materials:

  •   Quilter’s Sewing Bag pattern download from Crafsy.com
  •   ½ yard of 5 different coordinating fabrics – this will be enough for the exterior, lining, pockets, pocket linings and binding
  •   (1) 20” x 14” piece of Pellon single side fusible Flex-Foam (we carry this at Schiller’s)!
  •   ½ yard of coordinating fabric for the sides (mine is the red fabric)
  •   1 ½ yards of Pellon Shirtailor fusible interfacing (available at JoAnn’s)
  •   (3) 12” all-purpose zippers for the pockets
  •   (1) 30” double-puller purse zipper (we can order these for you)!
  •   Small piece of felt for pins and needles (optional)
  •   Sewing machine in good working order, power cord, etc.
  •   Thread to match your fabrics
  •   Size 90/14 - Jeans/Denim sewing machine needle
  •   Wonder Clips (optional)
  •   Marking pen, pins, zipper foot, ¼” foot, walking foot, hand sewing needle, scissors, seam ripper, basic sewing notions

  Preparation:

Choose two of your fabrics, one for the outside and one for the lining.

  • Cut a rectangle from each one measuring 20” x 14” and a piece of the fusible foam the same size.
  • Fuse wrong sides of the fabrics to each side of the foam so you have a quilt “sandwich”.
  • Quilt this piece as you wish with free motion quilting or with grid lines.  I quilted mine with a grid marked at 1 ½” apart and at a 60 degree angle.  This creates a pretty diamond pattern on your fabric.  Doing this step ahead of class will save a lot of class time!  Set aside for class.
  • Out of your coordinating fabric for the sides, cut (2) rectangles at 20” x 10”.  Also, cut two rectangles the same size from the Deco Bond and fuse to the wrong sides of the fabric.  Fold both pieces in half lengthwise RST and set aside for class.
  • Choose three fabrics for the pockets and cut out (2) rectangles from each fabric at 10” x 14” for a total of (6) pieces.  Also, cut (3) pieces of Shirtailor at 10” x 14” as well.
  • Out of the fabric for the binding, cut a total of 2 ½ yards of bias strips cut at 2 ½” wide.  Now you are ready for class!!  See you soon!!
