Designer Handbags is an “out of the box” approach to making handbags.  Nancy Zieman and Eileen Roche created the techniques to produce professional results using an embroidery machine.  These bags combine our love for machine embroidery and our love for sewing, all in one!  Together, these techniques create flawless bags that are full of personality and functionality.  The Airborne Bag is a nice sized tote that has a “smart pocket” on one side that converts to a flap, which fits over the handle of a rolling tote or suitcase.  So genius!  Then, when you reach your destination, you only have to lift your Airborne Bag off of the handle, close the zipper, and it becomes a pocket again!  In this class you will learn how to create corner trim designs that transform a rectangle of fabric into a fashionable handbag.  You will also learn how to create straps and attach them with machine embroidery, and make a decorative flap in the hoop as well.  It’s easier than you may think and very fun!  This finished bag is a great size, measuring 13 ½” square and 4” deep.  I made mine in a black denim/twill with red batik accents.  We have the book and DVD in store while supplies last but after our last shipment, they will not be available.  Don’t worry though, we will provide all the designs and instruction needed!!  This will be a two day class so the cost is $20.  I really hope that you can join us for this wonderful new class!!

Materials:

  •   ½ yard of ½” wide ribbon (to cover edges of zipper tape)
  •   5/8 yard fabric for main part of bag
  •   5/8 yard contrast fabric for the pocket, bottom corner designs, handle connectors and underside of tab closure
  •   1 yard fabric for the lining and inside pockets
  •   Approximately 10” of decorative trim for the top edge of pocket
  •   (2) 17 ½” x 16 ¼” pieces of Décor Bond fusible interfacing
  •   Floriani’s Heat n Sta fusible tear-away stabilizer (or one of your choice)
  •   (1) 10” all-purpose zipper to match
  •   Embroidery machine in good working order – if your machine is both a sewing and embroidery machine, please bring the proper attachments for using both – we will need to do a little bit of sewing prior to the embroidered sections
  •   A large size embroidery hoop (8” x 12”) and a smaller size (5” x 7”) hoop
  •   Embroidery arm, power cord, foot control and any other machine supplies
  •   Thread to match main bag fabric, contrast fabric and any other contrasting thread color that you would like on your bag
  •   Optional: embroidery design of your choice for the front of the bag.  The design should be approximately 6” x 6” and on a USB flash drive
  •   Basic sewing supplies

Cutting:

  •   From the main fabric cut: (1) 9” x 16 ¼” for the center panel, (2) 5” x 16 ¼” for the side panels, (1) 17 ½” x 16 ¼” for the front
  •   From the lining fabric cut: (2) 17 ½” x 16 ¼” and (2) 5” wide by WOF (width of fabric)
  •   Optional embroidery:  If you would like to add an embroidery design to the front of your bag, center the design about 6 ½” from the top of the 17 ½” x 16 ¼” front piece.  The top of the piece is the 16 ¼” edge.  This should be completed before you come to class.
