Pamela’s Patterns

“The Perfect T-Shirt”

During our September Sewcial, we welcomed Pamela Legget of “Pamela’s Patterns” in for a trunk show and a wonderful demo on some of her favorite tips and tricks for sewing with knits.  Pamela taught and was the manager years ago at Manchester Sewing Center, then spent a few years Pennsylvania, teaching and running the education department at a dealership down there.  Pamela even did a two-part series on making her T-Shirt TV’s most famous sewing personality, Nancy Zieman.

Most recently, she has moved back up our way and has opened up a studio in Vernon CT.  Aren’t we lucky!  Along with all of this teaching locally, Pamela has had a pattern line for years called “Pamela’s Patterns” and continues to make additions to her line all the time.  Pamela teaches nationally and is a certified Palmer/Pletsch instructor as well.

The Perfect T-Shirt is one of my favorite patterns from Pamela so we have decided to teach a class on making it!  Three pattern pieces are all you need to complete this top so rest assured you will have a completed garment at the end of class!  We will help you measure for a good fit, move darts if necessary, shorten armholes, how to use stabilizing tapes and sew seams on knit fabric like a pro.  Pamela’s Patterns are designed to fit and flatter women with REAL figures, so don’t worry if you have tried making clothes for yourself in the past and have been disappointed with the finished product.  Pamela has taken the guesswork out of commercial patterns and simplified the construction and fitting process through careful attention to all body types when developing her patterns.

This will be an all-day class so as to allow each of you sufficient time to complete your “Perfect T-Shirt”.  The cost will be $25 plus the cost of the pattern which is $14.  Following this write up will be details on what type of fabric for you to purchase and how much will be needed.  This pattern is designed for knit fabric with a good quality hand (not thin or flimsy).  Most of this top, with the exception of the darts, can be constructed nicely on a serger/overlock machine but if you don’t own a serger you can complete this top easily on a regular sewing machine as well.  I hope to see many of you in class!

Materials:

*Pamela’s Patterns “The Perfect T-Shirt” pattern (we will have here at Schiller’s)

*Good quality knit fabric including cotton, polyester, rayon, stretch lace or stretch velvet.  Knit fabric will usually come on 58”bolts as opposed to most cotton’s which come on 45” bolts.

*¾ Length or Long Sleeve T-Shirt: 1 5/8 yard of 60” wide fabric

*Short Sleeve T-Shirt: 1 ¼ yard of 60” wide fabric

*Good quality polyester thread, Stay Tape, Heat ‘n Bond Lite 5/8” or 7/8” wide (we will have these products at the store as well)

*Size 80/12 ballpoint or stretch machine needle

*Sewing machine or serger/overlock in good working condition with all accessories needed

*Basic sewing supplies including pins, erasable marking pen or chalk, small ruler, etc.

  Prep Work:

*Please wash and dry your fabric before class.  These fabrics can shrink significantly depending on the cotton content.  Have your pattern with you and, if you wish, you can do the high-bust measurement on yourself to determine the size of the paper pattern to cut out.  Pamela shows how to do this on the first page of the directions inside the pattern envelope.  If you are not comfortable doing this, we can certainly measure you when you come to class.  The pattern has two different front pieces.  If there is less than a 3” difference between your high- bust and full-bust measurement, use the Basic Front pattern piece.  If there is more than a 3” difference, use the Darted Front pattern piece.  If you are “on the fence”, try your first T-Shirt using the Darted Front, and the second using the Basic Front.  If you have any questions before class please just give me a call at the store!
