Let your creative spirit soar with this nature inspired table topper.  If you are thinking of sewing up something to welcome autumn into your home, try this easy to sew fold n stitch centerpiece.  I used some fall color fabrics from my stash and had a lot of fun putting this topper together.  This method is very simple for creating the leaves and can use up some scraps you may already have!  Add a pretty cinnamon or apple scented candle to the center and you will complete the look!  The topper is 17” in diameter so you can easily display it on any table you want to.  This will be a one day class and the charge will be $10.  There will be some preparation for you to complete prior to class so that we will be able to complete this project.  We will have this pattern here at Schiller’s for you to purchase and the cost is $9.00 (You can purchase this pattern while registering for this class using this link!).  I sure hope you will come join us for a bit of fall sewing and fun!  See you in class!!

Materials and Prep:

  •   3/8 yard fabric for back of leaves (mine is the red)
  •   3/8 yard fabric for front of leaves (mine is red as well)
  •   (8) 5” x 7” pieces of fabric for appliqued leaves – I split the leaves into just two segments each instead of the four segments shown on the pattern front so I only needed three fabrics in total for the whole project but please do whatever you wish!!
  •   ½ yard single sided fusible foam such as Pellon Fusible Flex Foam or Bosal In-R-Foam.  We will have the Pellon foam here at the store. Or you can use fusible fleece as I did for a little softer hand.
  •   2/3 yard 17” wide paper-back fusible web such as Heat’n Bond Lite or Lite Steam a Seam 2.
  •   Thread to match and or contrast your fabrics for seams and applique
  •   New size 14 universal sewing machine needle or if using batiks use a microtex size 14 needle
  •   Point turner, temporary marking pen, basic sewing supplies

Prep:  PLEASE HAVE ALL THE PREP COMPLETED PRIOR TO CLASS

  •   Once you purchase the pattern, make a copy of the template page so that you don’t have to cut up the original. From the copied page cut out the leaf templates (only the outside lines)
  •   Cut (2) 6” WOF (width of fabric) strips from the front and back fabric, and subcut each strip into (8) 6” x 8 1/2” rectangles.
  •   Place the paper back-fusible web over the Leaf Applique Template and trace 8 appliques onto the paper side, spaced ½” apart.  Trace the inner lines with a ruler and mark each section with the letters on the template.  Rough-cut out each shape ¼” outside of the traced lines.  Press your fusible web leaves to the wrong side of the (8) or (2 if you make my version) applique fabrics folloing the manufacturers instructions.  Cut out each applique on the traced lines using a sharp pair of scissors.  Divide each leaf applique into (4) or (2 if you make my version) sections along the inside lines.
  •   Trace (8) Leaf Shape Templates (larger leaf) onto the foam and cut out.
