Summer is on its way and that means we will be heading to the beach soon! Here is a nice little bag to carry your necessities like lotion or a book, headphones and your i-pod or a cover-up or a t-shirt. I made two samples for you, one done up exactly like the pattern states and another one with some added embroidery (of course!) and fabric handles.

Summer is on its way and that means we will be heading to the beach soon!  Here is a nice little bag to carry your necessities like lotion or a book, headphones and your i-pod or a cover-up or a t-shirt.  I made two samples for you, one done up exactly like the pattern states and another one with some added embroidery (of course!) and fabric handles.  If you haven’t sewn with, or embroidered on, vinyl screening yet you are in for a treat!  This soft screen material is very easy to work with and simple to embroider.  Home improvement stores sell the window screen in black, on various size rolls but some fabric and quilt shops have the screen for sale in other neat colors. 

I purchased the bag pattern through one of our usual venders so if you would like us to get the pattern for you, just let me know.  This will be a two day class so the cost will be $20 plus the cost of the pattern which is $8.  If you are a relatively fast sewer, you will probably be able to complete two bags in the two days, if not, take your time and just finish one bag.  I will be happy to help you with embroidering on the screening if you have an embroidery machine and haven’t tried this before!  Hope you can come sew with us and join in some very nice social sewing here at Schiller’s!




MATERIALS:

  • Screen Play pattern
  • Four fat quarters of good cotton fabric or any combination of fabrics ( I used just 2 fabrics)
    One package of extra wide double-fold bias tape, same color as your screening
  • Thread to match your screen and fabrics
  • Screen: For each bag,
    • (1) 14” x 21” for main body
    • (2) 2” x 14” for handles
  • Jeans needle size 14 or 16
  • All purpose foot, ¼” foot, edge stitching foot
  • Optional:
    • variegated thread for topstitching,
    • applique’s,
    • buttons,
    • other embellishments
  • Sewing machine in good working order
  • Marking chalk that will show up on your screen
  • Wet-n-gone stabilizer (if embroidering)
  • Scissors, pins, etc.  

 

CUTTING:

  • Bottom strip:
    • (2) 2 ½” x 15” – height can be varied (2” on embroidered tote)
  • Middle strip:
    • (2) 3” x 15” – height can be varied (2” on embroidered tote)
  • Top strip: (2) 2” x 15”
  • Top lining strips: (2) 2” x 15”
  • Screening – see above – or if you would like fabric handles, cut (2) strips of fabric 3” x 14”. Also, for fabric handles
  • You will need approx. 30” of 1” wide nylon webbing

 

Please complete all cutting prior to class!!
