If you are looking for a nice, easy quilting project that sews up quickly, this is the one for you!  The secret of success with this quilt is being sufficiently bold with your additional fabric.  You need to make the stars surrounding the dark four-patch blocks stand out.  It is also important to have contrast between the dark and light four-patch blocks, so look out for suitable charm packs with a good selection of lights and darks.  You could also use two charm packs in a medium/dark range of fabrics plus two plain/neutral charm packs.  I chose to use batik charm packs that included a nice selection of lights and darks.  I chose white as my additional fabric and added a dark blue and then a white border to make the quilt approximately 52” x 70”, a nice size for a lap quilt.  Very little cutting is necessary to get started.  You will only need to cut your additional fabric into squares and the sewing begins!  If you can sew a square to another square, you can make this quilt!  Choose some nice charm packs in a color scheme you like and before you know it you will have a beautiful quilt!

Finished quilt size approximately 52” x 70”

Materials :

  •   Four charm packs OR 140 5” squares
  •   2 ¼ yard accent fabric for snowball corners and narrow border (I used white)
  •   4 yards of fabric for the wider border, backing and binding ( I used dark blue)
  •   Thread to match your fabrics
  •   Sewing machine in good working order
  •   ¼” sewing machine foot
  •   Scissors, pins, etc.

Cutting and Prep:

  •   Sort your squares into seventy-two dark squares and sixty-eight light squares
  •   Divide the dark squares into 18 piles of four to make the dark 4-patch blocks.
  •   Divide the light squares into 17 piles of four to make the light 4-patch blocks.

Snowball Corners:

  •     Cut fifteen (2 ¾”) wide strips across the width of the accent fabric.  Subcut each strip into fifteen (2 ¾”) squares to make 225 in total.  Nine are spare.  Make sure your 2 ¾” cutting is accurate!

Border Fabrics:

  •      I cut a 3” wide dark blue border and a 2” wide white border.  The lengths that you need will depend on the size of the quilt you make.  In the materials portion, I listed enough fabric to make a 52” x 70” quilt but you can very easily make a smaller or larger size.

Binding Fabric

  •       Cut seven 2 ½” wide strips across the width of the fabric (selvedge to selvedge)
