This project was introduced last year at Baby Lock Tech in a class that we had the great pleasure of taking with Sue and Eleanor Burns. We will be making four of the Rabbit Hole blocks for this runner and a very simple pieced border. I used three coordinating fabrics for my sample but the original style uses only two contrasting fabrics.

Rabbit Hole Table Runner

The classic story of Alice in Wonderland by Lewis Carroll, begins with Alice sitting on a grassy bank, contemplating what to do.  Then she spies the White Rabbit running by and she decides to follow him…

 

Sue Bouchard’s interpretation of the Twisted Log Cabin Quilt is inspired by Alice’s journey and what it might have been like as she travelled down to a world completely foreign to her.

 

This project was introduced last year at Baby Lock Tech in a class that we had the great pleasure of taking with Sue and Eleanor Burns.  We will be making four of the Rabbit Hole blocks for this runner and a very simple pieced border.  I used three coordinating fabrics for my sample but the original style uses only two contrasting fabrics.  The entire top of this runner is pieced using 2 ½” strips making it quick to cut and sew together.  The finished size of the runner is 18” x 54”.  This class does require that you purchase the Wonky Ruler and the pattern (sorry), but we will give you a ten percent discount on the ruler if you are attending class!!  They will both be available here at the store for purchase.  The ruler retails for $29.95 and the pattern costs $9.50.  This will be a two day class and will cost $20.  I had a lot of fun sewing this runner and using this awesome ruler, hope you can join me in class!

*Cut fabric strips selvedge to selvedge. Otherwise known as WOF or width of fabric*

 

Materials:

  •   Rabbit Hole Quilt pattern
  •   2 ½” Strip Wonky Ruler
  •   Sewing machine in good working order
  •   ¼” sewing machine foot (the one with the guide or flange works the best because you will not have to be using pins)
  •   Thread to match your fabrics
  •   Small travel iron and pad (optional but a real help)!
  •   Walking foot (optional but nice to have)
  •   Rotary cutter and ruler
  •   Scissors, pins, etc. 

Yardage and Cutting:

  Light – 7/8 yard (the green fabric on sample)

  •     Blocks – (8) 2 ½” strips
  •     Pieced Border – (2) 2 ½” strips

  Dark – 1 1/3 yard (the blue fabric on sample)

  •    Blocks – (8) 2 ½” strips
  •   Pieced Border – (2) 2 ½” strips
  •   Binding – (4) 2 ½” strips

 Wide Border – 1/3 yard

  •     Wide Border – (4) 2 ½” strips (the floral fabric on sample)    

 Backing – 1 2/3 yards (the floral on sample)

 Batting – 22” x 58” piece (a low loft cotton/cotton blend works best)
