Serger Essentials - Day 1

Date: Friday, April 15th, 2016

Time: 9:30 AM to 5:00 PM

COST: $75.00

Fons & Porter has just published Gail Yellen's new book "Serger Essentials". We have convinced Gail to use this book as the basis for a two-day class (actually the class is being offered as two-one day classes). The content for each day is completely different. You can register for either or both classes (you must register for each day separately). Due to the number of attendees, this class is being held in the Community Center at the Mansfield Fire Department.

Two of MY favorite sayings are :

  • “All tests are easy…if you know the answers”
  • “ Everything is difficult…until it becomes easy”

I am introducing this class with these sayings because Gail Yellen is one of those rare individuals who can take a subject (in this case sewing with a serger) and help answer your questions so that what you thought was difficult…becomes easy.

Gail recently assembled many of her tips, techniques and knowledge into a book which has just been published by Fons & Porter.  We are so impressed with this book (and of course Gail) that we requested that she use it as the basis for a first-of-its-kind class.  Gail has graciously agreed to create this class just for us (and you).

This class is being offered as two 1-day, hands-on, classes.  You can take either or both of the classes.  The cost for each day is $75 (including all kits, lunch and snacks).  If you take BOTH days you will get a signed copy of Gail’s new book (can’t beat that).

Day 1 will focus on the overlock portion of your serger.  Gail will take you step-by-step through a variety of stitches, presser feet accessories, and thread options.  She will also cover threading, tension, differential feed and needles.  You will be doing hands-on projects to reinforce these lessons.

Day 2 will focus more on those sergers that have coverstitch capabilities.  Similar to Day 1, Gail will cover the variety of stitches, accessory feet and thread options that open up to you when your serger has coverstitch abilities.  You will again be doing hands-on projects to reinforce these lessons.

IMPORTANT:  IF YOUR SERGER DOES NOT HAVE COVERSTITCH BUT YOU WANT TO COME TO THIS CLASS, DON’T DESPAIR, JUST LET US KNOW AND WE WILL MAKE SURE THAT YOU HAVE A MACHINE TO WORK ON.

This really is a first-of-its-kind set of classes.  Come learn with one of the best sewing educators in the world (she literally just “wrote the book”).  Register early because space is limited.

We would like to introduce all of our customers to Gail Yellen.  Although some of you may already know Gail from her days with Manchester Sewing Center, we know that she may be new to many of you.

Gail has been sewing since she was in middle school and what started as a hobby quickly became a passion and a form of creative expression. Experimenting with all types of embellishment techniques on her sewing machine and serger is a favorite pastime. She has been a featured speaker and teacher at American Sewing Guild National Conferences, the Sewing & Stitchery Expo in Puyallup, WA, Original Sewing & Quilt Expos and numerous American Sewing Guild Chapter Events around the country.

Gail is an active member of the American Sewing Guild CT Chapter and was the Manchester Neighborhood Group Leader for 10 years.

Gail Yellen  teaches sewing and serger technique classes, garment construction and embellishment workshops. Chock full of valuable ideas and information for garment, quilt and home décor sewers, her classes are geared to all levels of sewing skills. Her “artful patterns with possibilities” have clear, easy-to-follow instructions and feature graceful, flattering lines. Gail particularly loves to teach sewers embellishment techniques that can transform the most basic garments into art-to-wear. An active member of the American Sewing Guild, Gail loves sharing her knowledge with enthusiastic sewers all over the country and would love to teach a workshop at your favorite sewing center/store or for your sewing association.

Use your serger to its full potential!

The serger is the most versatile tool a sewist can use, capable of hemming, seaming, decorative finishes and more. Too often, sergers are used for finishing edges and nothing more, simply because "it's too complicated to change the settings." Author Gail Yellen is here to demystify the serger and help you get the most out of your machine! By familiarizing yourself with the various components and how they affect the stitch, you'll tackle new stitches and techniques with a new enthusiasm.

Features:

Handy Operator Tips explain common handling errors and how to avoid them Accessory Foot Appendix details the different serger feet available and when to use them 5 simple projects put your new serging knowledge into practice Coverstitch overview complete with decorative and construction techniques Quick Reference Guide lets you quickly find the machine settings for popular stitches Advice on threading, tension, differential feed, and needles relevant to all models; tips for using decorative threads that result in masterful finishes, cover stitch and more--it's all here in Serger Essentials!
Here is just some of what you will be doing...

Get to know your own machine. Bring your serger, power cord, foot control, owner’s manual and all accessories. (You probably have a few you didn’t even know you owned!)

Day One: The overlock stitch

  • Getting to know your serger
  • Setting up your serger
  • Identifying and understanding serger components
  • Useful accessories
  • Needles and threads
  • Threading your machine
  • Understanding the stitch
  • Differential feed—what is it and how does it work?
  • Tension control

We’ll do projects to demonstrate and reinforce how the serger components and adjustments affect the stitch. Sometimes something as basic as changing stitch length can solve a problem!  If you don’t own a serger with wave stitch capability, we’ll have machines for you to see how easy it is to finish an edge with this gorgeous stitch.

Day Two: The Cover Stitch/Chain Stitch

  • What is the cover stitch? Triple, narrow, wide
  • Chain stitch
  • Machine set-up
  • How does it differ from the overlock?
  • Why is it the industry standard for finishing knit garments and active wear?
  • Threading your machine
  • Understanding the stitch
  • Utility and decorative applications
  • Stitching in the round
  • Feet and accessories for professional results

Projects will give you a great understanding of how to use all of the cover stitch variations and the chain stitch. Did you know that the chain stitch can make alterations super fast? Wait ‘til you see what you can do with these stitches!
