Beginning Heirloom Sewing - Heirloom Pillow

Would you like to try heirloom sewing? It is a very pretty and vintage technique letting you design special “heirloom” projects all by using your sewing machine. With a few different sewing needles and sewing feet, a pillow like this is very easy to make! This technique can be used many different ways and once you master it, I am sure you will enjoy thinking up ways to incorporate it into your sewing. Looking forward to seeing you in class!

Note:  We do carry any of the needed sewing supplies (with the exception of the fabric and trim).

Supply list for Heirloom Pillow Class

  • 16 inch pillow form
  • Approximately 3/4 yard print fabric
  • 1-1/2 yards of 3/4” flat lace
  • Approximately 2-1/2 yards gathered ruffle lace for trimming the pillow (optional)
  • 20 inch square of 100% cotton fabric-Cotton batiste is a good choice.
  • Wash away marker
  • Good sewing thread to match fabric
  • Embroidery thread for pintucks and insertion. You will need two spools of the same color thread for your pintucks.
  • A bobbin wound with matching thread
  • A spare bobbin
  • 5 groove pintuck foot
  • Size 11 sewing needle
  • Size 16 wing needle
  • Size 1.6/80 twin needle
  • 4 pieces of 2” x 20” washaway stabilizer
  • A pair of pocket scissors or a pair of small sharp scissors.
  • Spray starch.

If you want to add an embroidery to your pillow you will need the following additional items:

  • Embroidery design loaded unto your sewing machine - the design must be no larger than 3” wide and 7” long. A simple design works best.
  • 1 piece of tear-away stabilizer if you wish to embroider a design.
  • Thread to match your design.
  • Hoop for embroidery

Things to do before the first class:

1.   Please make a center cross on your 20” square of cotton batiste with a wash away marker.

2.   From the center mark, measure 3” to the right and draw a line from the top of the square to the bottom with a wash away marker.  Repeat this for the left side.

3.   Measure 1 1/8” from the lines you just drew and make another line-one on the right and one on the left.

4.   The last step to be ready for class is to measure 1 1/8” from the last lines you drew and make another line-one on the right and one on the left. You should have a center mark and three lines on either side of the mark.
