Do you see stars or do you see hexagons?  We have another addition to the Dream Weaver collection for you to try!  This design is called “Woven Stars” and is the latest in the woven series of projects.  This fascinating optical illusion is made by a combination of sewing and weaving!  Tubes of fabric are woven without ever having to sew a “Y” seam.  No piecing is required.  And, it is completely reversible so you can use a different border fabric on each side to make two different looks.  If you have tried any of the other woven projects, you will fall right into the groove and make this runner in a snap.  Don’t worry though, if you haven’t tackled this type of weaving yet, it is easy to catch on and very fun!  We will need two classes to complete this project so make sure you are able to attend both of the days listed.  We know that there are already enough UFO’s in each of our sewing rooms!  Hope you will join our class!

The color play of the star design depends upon the selection of fabrics.  Two contrasting fabrics are required.  Very small prints or tone on tone prints are recommended.  Use only non-directional prints.  Choose two coordinating prints for the border.  For versatility, consider a holiday theme on one side, and an everyday design on the other.  Finished size of runner is approx. 18” X 48”.

***We suggest using good quality quilting cottons ***

Fabric A: (background) 1 & 1/2 yards

Fabric B: (stars) 2 & ½ yards

Binding: 1/3 yard

Border Fabric: 1/3 yard each of two fabrics

Fusible Batting: 10” X 50”

Other supplies:

  • Sewing machine in good working order
  • A ¼” foot and a walking foot to fit your machine
  • Thread to match fabric
  • Your favorite tube turning tool.  We recommend the “Fasturn”  tube turning system, this is available here at Schiller’s.
  • A piece of flannel, felt or batting that measures at least 18” X  46” - this is not part of the finished project, it is what you will be doing your weaving on.
  • Water or air erasable marking pen.
  • Ruler with a 60 degree line on it
  • Bodkin
  • Scissors, pins, sewing supplies, etc.

** REQUIRED CUTTING AND SEWING INSTRUCTIONS **

Fabric A: Cut four 3” strips crosswise (selvedge to selvedge)

Fabric A: Cut twelve 3” X 34” strips lengthwise (parallel to selvedge)

Fabric B: Cut six 3” strips crosswise (selvedge to selvedge)

Fabric B: Cut twenty-four 3” X 34” strips lengthwise (parallel to selvedge)

  • Fold each strip of fabric in half lengthwise right sides together and sew into long tubes using a ¼” seam.
  • Turn the tubes right side out and press them carefully keeping the seam exactly on the edge of the tube.  This hides the seam and makes the table runner reversible.
  • Trim the ten long tubes (selvedge to selvedge) to exactly the same length.
  • Cut the 34” tubes in half to make seventy-two 17” tubes.
